Breath: The Essence of All Life and Creation

by Kahu Brian Vatcher on May 28, 2010

Blue hills With so many of us currently in transition and change in our lives, getting intimately familiar with the breath brings calm stillness, clarity, and an open state of acceptance to the circumstances life presents. Let’s use our breath consciously to reach the point of stillness within ourselves where we can surrender to our greatest and highest good.

The breath is the soul of physical life, the governing, nourishing life giving creative energy of the  Source inhabiting form through you and as you. Breath is the fundamental consistency of all life throughout the universe. Its rhythm is constant and eternal, just as the tide is to the beach, the breath is to the body.

The cycle of breath is a filling up and an emptying of creative life. From the perspective of the spirit, it is the way in which life creates expression through form and withdrawals it once again. All life is an endless ebb and flow of filling and emptying creative intention, focus, and the perfect poised fulfillment of what lies behind that being, the Source of all existence.

As breath is drawn into the body, creation is born and sustained. The breath is the nourishment that causes the body, the ultimate creative effort brought to physical life, to maintain its form in which the soul resides. This action is reflected in the in breath. Once form has outlived its usefulness it must return to its essential nature in the non-physical until it is once again drawn back into physicality. All of creation has a cycle, as witnessed in the seasons moving from birth to death, and once again back into rebirth. The out breath is the release of the form back into its formlessness, back to its origin. In breath brings life, out breath releases and takes it away.

The Source of life, and therefore reality, lies at the still point between the in breath and out breath. It is the eternal awareness behind every creative effort and all expression in the worlds of dimensional form. The body is sustained by the movement of the in and out breaths, yet it is the still point between the cycles of breath where the intelligence of the spiritual non physical realms lie. All life begins and ends in this realm of expanded awareness and intelligent power, the potentiality of all creation.

Once the mind becomes attuned to the rhythm of the breath it begins to slow down and transcend the physical body and to become available to the non physical rhythms of life, as well as to those that hold its creative nature. At the top of the in breath one becomes aware that one is holding the creation of form within oneself, fulfilling the promise of the creator to its creation, reflecting the ability of that intelligent energy to take form intentionally and directly. Once the breath is released, it begins its journey back to the formless. As energy has fulfilled its obligation, it is returned to its authentic nature outside the dimensional world. Represented by the out breath, it is released and collapsed back into itself, just as planets, civilizations, people and nature are born, grow, express, and also return. In essence, the human breath is a metaphor for the functioning of Source, or the creative energy of universal intelligence

It is in the still point between the breaths that the present moment exists. Here is the only true present, the place where the eternal nature of life can be perceived. It is impossible to perceive the present on the in breath or the out breath during this cycle of creative effort that brings energy into form. Once the full cycle is complete, then one understands the eternal nature of life and the wholeness of life born out of the breath.

Take a moment and practice breathing intentionally, watching every in breath and out breath as they rise and fall within the cavity of the chest. Once comfortable, relax even more deeply until the breath begins to slow down and become very rhythmic and even. Begin to notice how you perceive the moment between the breaths when the final release is complete and the beginning of the new cycle has not yet begun. Here lies the eternal, and the timeless, in all creation, and in you. It lies beyond time, beyond mind, and beyond physical form. It is the beginning and the end of all creativity and all life.

“William”,
Glad to see the “leave a comment” is back on. I read this on the eve of the 28th and it was not availible. But I immediately sent it to a client of mine. Just that morn she had been asking me about meditation & breathe. Perfect! Thank you for putting in words that which I had difficulty with.
Blessings, Lucia
